I think the opposite is also true. The Indians of India know little about the Indians of Latin America. Growing up in India, I myself had no idea of the Incas. The two worlds are simply too far apart. The Bollywood phenomenon in Lima may change that a bit -- at least one way!

In some of the Caribbean islands though -- Trinidad, say -- where there is a significant South Asian population, perceptions may be different.Harihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12339987786745985294noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14626538.post-77405057970573390382010-08-22T15:54:33.959-06:002010-08-22T15:54:33.959-06:00Good post Hari. As I think I told you, in Peru South Asia is probably the major world region we have had least contact with (which I think is part of the reason Bollywood is such a revelation to people and why some people get so into that subculture). There are in the country descendants of Europeans, Africans, many East Asians and even Middle Easterners, in addition to the native majority, but no South Asian immigrant population. People are still confused what to call Indians, since indian to them means native american. The pattern of using the term Hindu (confusing and conflating the hindu religion with Indian nationality) became particularly established in Latin America for that reason. That's starting to change slowly through more contact with Indian films (and a few other aspects of Indian culture, but yes, it's mainly the films).Federico Helfgotthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03677981479305577335noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14626538.post-15610135539722582132010-08-15T20:39:02.097-06:002010-08-15T20:39:02.097-06:00Khalil -- You took the words out of my mouth!
